What do you intend to do? What issue(s) will you discuss, and from what point of view? Be specific, mentioning not only the theme of your paper, but also any unique aspects of that theme that you plan to address.
Why is this research paper worth doing? What is the importance of this issue, and how does it fit into psychology and the mass media?
What approach will you take to addressing your topic? Here you will need to explain your strategy, which might be to examine a particular theory or body of research, to compare several theories, or to consider the relevance of a particular theory or body of research to everyday reality.
What will be the limitations of your research and your discussion? This statement should define what you will and will not cover. The length of your paper will most likely limit the extent of your work. Be sure to note any obvious relevant variables that you will have to omit.
The body of your paper is where you do what you have told the reader you were setting out to do in the introduction. Pay attention to the clarity of interpretation and the relevance of the theories, concepts, and research findings to psychology and the mass media. Any quoted material and any ideas attributable to someone else must be acknowledged in proper in-text citations, and listed in correct reference format at the end of the paper.

All U.S. presidents, especially the successful ones, have known how to use and, sometimes, manipulate the media to increase presidential influence and power. Two recent presidents who were obsessed with manipulating the media, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, were both rather bad doing so. On the other hand, Ronald Reagan was masterful at using mass media to his advantage. If you are interested in history, take a look at how Lincoln, FDR, and Kennedy used media to their political advantage. Even President Eisenhower in the 1950s believed that all kinds of communication – personal to mediated – would end the Cold War because people in Soviet-dominated countries would be envious of the freedoms and riches (relatively speaking) that were more available in democratic/capitalistic countries! You may not know much about President Eisenhower, but he was both an essential leader in World War II to coordinate the Allied invasion of Europe and a canny president who knew how to keep the U.S. military out of small, but deadly wars around the world. In the press and on TV, “Ike” as he was affectionately called, appeared to be a kindly, mild-mannered older man. In reality, he was tough, shrewd, and did not suffer fools.

Again, your book does an excellent job at pointing out how mass mediated news shape our awareness of the world and our judgments about what is important. What other kinds of stories do you wish the media would focus more on? Which topics should they just cut way back on their coverage? Why?
